I now have seventeen chooks to feed, and as of this morning they all have names.
A is for Apple, Abu's head light sussex lady, now laying daily.
B is for Banana, or Nanna for short. Another light sussex, climbing in the nesting box but not yet laying.
C is for Cherry, the smallest and probably youngest light sussex lady.
D is for Doris Plum, a light sussex with a hint of grey (or blue in chook speak) to her feathers. Laying soon?
E is for Elderberry. My surprise light sussex roo - how head of his own household at The Vineyard.
F is for Figgy. This flighty bantam is now laying daily, and I'm hoping she'll decide to go broody soon.
G is for Grape. A mystery blend of mainly white with black flecks, one of Figgy's chicks.
H is for Honeydew. The light sussex girl chick fostered by Figgy. Really pretty and growing well.
I is for Iceberg. The gluttonous light sussex roo chick, fostered by Figgy and the biggest of her bunch by far.
J is for Juniper. My guess is a bantam x barred rock cross. One of Figgy's, Pinecone has his eye on her.
K is for Kiwifruit. The new black hen, slightly larger than Figgy but smaller than the rest. Nice girl.
L is for Lychee. A purebred blue barred rock, and idolised by Juniper - her 'mini-me'. They hang out a lot.
M is for Mango. An orange backyard blend, who came home with the turkeys. Laying I think.
N is for Nashi Pear. Another turkey trip passenger and pretty backyard blend in shades of brown.
O is for Olive. A purebred barnevelder girl who's been laying since the day she arrived with the turkeys.
P is for Pinecone. This comical frizzle bantam boy walks like a wind up toy wearing tassled cowboy pants. An absolute hoot!
Finally, there's my stunning new Barnvelder roo, who I've named Prince Charming. He is spectacular, with his technicolour coat dusted off by long golden neck and saddle feathers.
As soon as I saw him he reminded me of a character in one of the Shrek movies. I'm a kid's movie addict, and the Shrek series is my favourite. Prince Charming is a pretty mummy's boy who constantly tosses back his long blonde hair. My beautiful new roo does a strut that's SO Prince Charming.
What I've learnt today:
1. A new egg tally record - four eggs before noon. Could be another one to come.
2. The Boss is a very talented turkey whisperer, but that story is a whole new post!
