We used to live in Gibbston Valley - the Valley of Vines - Central Otago New Zealand. Now Abu the Rooster's Light Sussex Ladies have made the move to Bannockburn - the Heart of the Desert. This is the tale of a total amateur having a go at the farming lifestyle, with kune kune pigs, sheep, and a fascinating family of chooks. Our location may have shifted, but Pinot Noir still surrounds us.

The Elusive Headline
This morning I couldn't decide between "Turkey Wrangling", "Penthouse Chicken Coop Delux" or "The Accidental Rooster". My cup runneth over!
Wednesday was a frenzed day of turkey house conversion and fence construction. Wednesday night The Boss and I rounded up the bantam and chicks I'd been babysitting for The Winemaker's Wife, and transported them, along with Elderberry, to their new coop delux at The Vineyard. I also gave myself a stern talking to about not really needing another frizzle or a bantam chick and decided to let these two wee featherballs shift with their brothers and sisters.
The Winemaker's Wife was pleased at the surprise additions (hell - I hope she was pleased and not just being polite), and eventually we managed to persuade everyone to head into their new home for the night. Just to keep things interesting, Elderberry picked that moment to take flight over the fence and down towards the piggles paddock. As highly trained professionals, it didn't take too long for the four of us, plus the dog to round him back up.
Yesterday I headed off to collect the turkeys with a winebin strapped to The Boss' trailer and a list of things a mile long to do on my road trip south.
The day was a bit of a blur really, let's just say turkeys are INCREDIBLY vocal when they're alarmed, and I didn't manage to cross everything of the list before picking up my two new chooks from Makarewa and aiming the truck for home.
At half past six last night all I wanted to do was curl up on the sofa and have a nana nap, but instead we dropped off my chooks, shot down to The Vineyard, did a turkey wing clipping session, shut them in their new house, shot up to The Farm, rounded up Pinecone and his mates, then finally headed home.
It STILL couldn't be wine o'clock as we still had to clip my two new chooks wings - they're a beautiful blue Barred Rock and a mystery blend black hen by the way. These girls and Pinecone's mob had to be introduced to Abu the Roo, along with the new rooster and three hens I'd acquired at the turkey pick up. Hence "The Accidental Rooster".
What I've learnt today:
1. Figgy has now started laying! Her eggs are as big as Apple's - a great effort for a wee bantam.
2. New chooks to name - the Barred Rock has inherited "Lychee", the mystery black chook "Kiwifruit", which leaves me letters M, N and O for the new girls. The new rooster I've already named, his title will be revealed tomorrow!
