Elderberry the gender bender

My life seems to be dominated by chooks at the moment.  Headed up to The Farm this morning and found Figgy the flighty bantam drinking from the piggles water supply. That was a good start to the day as I thought I was in for a long slog through the paddocks looking for her.  Herded her back into the chicken run where she promptly did a fast lap chasing Pinecone. Sigh - poor wee bloke.

Arrived back Home to find we've been overrun by workers busily shoot thinning in the vineyard that sits in front of our house.  It must have been "Bring your dog to work day" because there are at least five dogs roaming around.  This doesn't impress The Boss and I as we have two Maine Coon cats who consider this to be their territory. Imagine if I decided to take Abu the Roo with me when I went to someone elses place! He could just run free and have a wonderful time.  A little bit of courtesy wouldn't go astray when it comes to pet ettiquette.  Maybe I should head out with the .22 for a bit of rabbit shooting this afternoon - that'll freak out the dog people.

Hey, I'm not really that mean, that's why I'm having a real dilemma over Elderberry. The photo above is a couple of weeks old now, but left to right it shows; Elderberry, Doris Plum and Cherry.  They're all the same age, but Elderberry is looking suspiciously masculine.

I spent ages watching her this morning, and while I desperately want her to be a 'she', doubts are growing.  She has strainer post thick ankles compared with the other girls and is definitely taller and leaner.  The breeder I bought her off said he'll refund my money if Elderberry starts to crow but that's not the point.  If she's a he we'll have to EAT her!  I'm just not ready to go there yet.

What I've learnt today:
1.  Giving your chickens a whole lettuce provides more entertainment than any comedy on television.
2. Tomorrow is the day The Boss will slaughter one of the lambs for a community bbq. I hope he doesn't need me to help....
