It's always wonderful to discover you have a new skill. I can't catch, I'm as musical as a fish and I missed out on the gene that makes most kiwis rugby fanatics.
Naturally I'm constantly on the look out for new talents to make up for these shortcomings.
The Boss and I headed up to The Farm on Saturday to visit the piggles and check on the chicks. We hadn't been there long when Figgy the flighty bantam made an appearance. The Boss decided this was an ideal opportunity to catch her, clip a wing and take her back to our place (guaranteeing wee Pinecone's safety).
I have no idea how professional chicken wranglers operate, but I was armed with a fishing net and a cat cage. Figgy was pretty much cornered in the chicken run when I took a lunge at her with the fish net, causing her to promptly take flight over the fence and onto the shed roof. The Boss managed to get her back down to ground level (thanks to a combination of bad language and a few well aimed clods of dirt), then we chased her around the pig paddock til she eventually got worn out and was almost happy to head into the cat cage for a rest.
Since I was an total failure on the wrangling side of this chicken operation, once we got home I made up for my lack of skill with a beautiful wing clip. Luckily a book from the Arrowtown Library covered how to do that job in short words with an excellent illustration.
Tomorrow I'm determined to be organised enough to take some decent photos of the piggles, as well as a few extra images to add to my blog. As my photography and web design skills are only slightly better than my singing - wish me luck!
What I've learnt today:
1. Apply lavender scented body lotion to your legs AFTER you've fed the piggles.
2. Elderberry, my gender bender chicken, is starting to grow the beautiful green tinted tail features that are the pride of every manly Light Sussex rooster. Big, sad sigh.
